Accessing someone else’s information (Proxy Access)

You may be able to access another person’s GP online services if you are their:

  • parent
  • family member
  • carer
  • representative

This is known as proxy access.

What proxy access allows

Once approved, proxy access may allow you to:

  • order repeat prescriptions
  • book or cancel appointments
  • view parts of the medical record
  • manage healthcare online using linked profiles in the NHS App

The level of access provided may vary depending on the circumstances and patient consent.

Request proxy access

To request access, please complete our online form:

  • the NHS App

You can switch between profiles using linked profiles.

Children aged 11 to 15

When a child reaches age 11, online proxy access is automatically removed as part of our confidentiality process for young people.

At this age, young people may be entitled to confidential healthcare and may wish to access services independently.

For this reason, online proxy access is not routinely continued between the ages of 11 and 15.

Parents and carers can still support their child’s healthcare by:

  • contacting the practice
  • booking appointments as required
  • attending appointments where appropriate,
  • helping manage care,
  • requesting support from the clinical team.

Requests for ongoing online access will only be considered in exceptional circumstances where there is a clear clinical need or best interests reason.

Any access granted will be limited to the minimum necessary level.

Young people aged 16 and over

Young people aged 16 and over are usually considered able to manage their own online services and healthcare access unless exceptional circumstances apply.

Confidentiality and data protection

We take patient confidentiality seriously.

Access decisions are made in line with:

  • UK GDPR
  • Data Protection Act 2018
  • NHS confidentiality guidance
  • safeguarding responsibilities
  • national proxy access guidance
